Tips for flower arranging with the Sandhurst and Crowthorne Flower Club

It’s the 1st of March which means Spring is just around the corner! It’s the season of new beginnings, where the days grow longer, the temperature gets milder and flowers bloom.
To mark the occasion and the countdown until the new season begins, we sat down with Alison Vacher, Chairman of the Sandhurst and Crowthorne Flower Club, to talk about the club and her tips for flower arranging.
Hi Alison, could you tell us a bit about the Sandhurst & Crowthorne Flower Club?
Sandhurst & Crowthorne Flower Club has been running for nearly 60 years. We are affiliated to NAFAS (the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies). We meet in Crowthorne Parish Hall on the first Wednesday of every month (excluding January and August) at 7:30pm.
At our meetings we may have a demonstration where a NAFAS qualified demonstrator produces a number of arrangements which are raffled off at the end. At other times we may have a workshop or tutorial where members will create their own designs. Most months we have a club competition where members bring in a design to interpret a given title and these are judged, usually by the visiting demonstrator.
We take part in events organised by the Berks Bucks & Oxon Area of NAFAS. We also participate in the Crowthorne Carnival and play a major role in the Crowthorne Flower Festival.
How can people get involved?

Do you have any tips for people new to flower arranging?
When buying flowers always look for freshness – firm stems, no faded petals. Cut 2cm off the stems at a 45º angle and place the flowers in water with flower food so they have a good drink before you start to arrange them.
What flowers can we expect to see as we move into Spring?
Daffodils and tulips are now freely available. Daffodils don’t get on with other flowers and are generally best in a vase of water on their own. Tulips are good value as they last well but remember they keep growing after they have been cut.
