A whistle-stop tour of wonderful Wokingham

Our Renaissance Wokingham community is situated close to the town centre and with a stylish guest suite it’s perfect for when friends or family of our homeowners and tenants come to stay.  

So, whether you are a local, visiting a relative in the area or popping through on a staycation, we take a look at what Wokingham and its surrounds has to offer for a fantastic, fun packed weekend agenda:  

10am: Start the day with a late breakfast in Wokingham’s historic heart at Gails’ Bakery and then enjoy a stroll through some of the historic streets, like Rose Street, a quiet residential terrace of half-timbered houses, some of which still have their 600-year-old facades. In the 16th century it is thought that these houses contained silk looms and one of the gardens still has a mulberry bush, believed to have been planted for silk manufacture in Tudor times. 

11am: Try a ‘Tour and Tasting’ at Stanlake Park Wine Estate, an award-winning sparkling wine producer just north of Wokingham where you can book tours of the winery and vineyard and taste the eight wines they produce. It might be a good idea to book a cab as there’s a lovely Wine Bar with a garden to enjoy a light lunch. 

2pm: If you are looking for some pampering then nearby Nirvana Spa has six different pools, including ones for swimming, hydrotherapy and flotation. The delightful spa garden is the perfect place to relax after one of the indulgent spa treatments. Or if a museum visit perks your interest more, or if the grandchildren are visiting, The Museum of Berkshire Aviation has it all. Built on the historic site of Woodley Airfield, it offers a fascinating look at aircraft history. 

6pm: To round off the day, head out to one of Wokingham’s tempting local restaurants like the ever popular Rossini for an Italian treat or refined South Asian restaurant, Baranda. Wokingham also boasts a thriving amateur repertory group which puts on eight shows a year at Wokingham Theatre. 

Sunday: Any Sunday calls for a hearty, traditional Sunday lunch.  In the heart of Wokingham, you can find the family friendly community pub The Dukes Head which has a lovely garden. Further afield The Dog & Duck in the nearby village of Emmbrook offers delicious food from traditional pub fare, wood fired pizzas and a sensational Sunday lunch. The perfect end to any weekend.
