Set in the beautiful Staffordshire countryside, Lichfield has a long and fascinating history as a religious, economic and cultural centre. In the 18th century, Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin, formed the Lunar Society with other leading thinkers. They held their meetings at Darwin’s house on Beacon Street and played an important role in shaping society and industry. From the iconic triple-spired cathedral to the cobbled market square that has hosted fairs for nine centuries, the city’s history forms an integral part of its character.

Today, Lichfield is home to a variety of retail and dining opportunities, as well as its many cultural attractions. Just minutes from Chapter House, the library hosts events, talks and puts on exhibitions in the upstairs gallery. Three leisure centres offer exercise classes and facilities for racquet sports, while restaurants, cafés and bars are in good supply across the city.
